Ms. Lucy Kennedy, a resident at SHC of North Florida and recent recipient of the Eden Alternative Award, was also honored as the “2016 FHCA Resident of the Year” by the Florida Health Care Association (FHCA). She worked with Senator Don Gaetz to get an increase in the personal needs allowance for residents. She helped triple the nursing center resident personal needs allowance in Florida. She traveled to Orlando earlier this month to accept her award on behalf of Florida’s 70,000 plus residents who were so deserving of this increase.
Representative Matt Gaetz and Senator Don Gaetz presented Ms. Lucy, former Resident Council President of Signature HealthCARE of North Florida, with a proclamation for inspiring the idea to triple residents’ personal needs allowance. Rep. and Sen. Gaetz were instrumental in seeing this increase included in the 2014 Florida state budget.

For SHC of North Florida’s observance of the Global Day of Prayer, elders and staff gathered outside in our courtyard around the flagpole. I led the service with a short devotional on the importance of prayer, then I asked one of our staff members to offer a word of prayer.
We also opened it up for elders and staff to voice prayers if they felt led. It was an amazing day, feeling the spirit moving with prayers being lifted up for residents, staff, and the company we work for.

More than 1,000 Signature staff members registered for the recent Spirituality LearnFEST, a virtual learning conference that encouraged participants to consider the impact of spirituality, if fully activated, in a long-term care environment.
And that number doesn’t even include the many who joined in groups, in offices, breakrooms and wherever there were TVs or computers at Signature centers across 10 states to view the live broadcast. The event featured sessions that tied spirituality to numerous aspects of long-term care and health care, from clinical care to legislative involvement and the impact of spirituality in the workplace.
